Today I watched the Divergent (2014) | Review

Divergent (2014) Storyline

Divergent the movie is story about a girl named Beatrice who is looking for her place in the new system of governance as human civilization coped with their differences after world war III. The devastated war prone area was separated from the developing civilization by a huge wall to avoid any bad reflections of the war. The Leaders in order to avoid any future wars and in order to maintain peace came up with the concept of Factions which were divided into five parts based on human virtues mainly selfless (Abnegation), Truthful and smart (Erudite),Peaceful (Amity),Honest (Candor) and fearless (Dauntless). Each of these groups served the society like the Abnegations helped the poor and even the Factionless who fit in none of the categories, Erudite spoke the truth and provided their views, Amity and Candor kept the factions alive and lively with goods and products, while the Dauntless acted as soldiers to protect the factions.  Beatrice always admired the fearless Dauntless but also was smart and selfless when it came to saving someone, so she was confused as to where she belonged in the group of factions.

Families every year had to send their kids as they turned 18 to find out as to which group of faction did they belong, Beatrice along with his brother who supposedly seemed like a Abnegation took the test to determine their groups and something very rare was found in Beatrice results as she was sedated and tested with induced hallucinations where a rare type called the divergent was found in her which was a combination of Dauntless, Erudite and Abnegation. The tester apparently had a divergent brother who was killed by the Factions as the Factions fear the divergent for their unpredictable thinking especially they feared the free thinking.  Both parents of Beatrice are government workers and support their leader but very recently the Erudite suspect that the Abnegations are hiding the divergent as a result both Beatrice and her brother were also in their indirect list of attacks. On the day of ceremony of induction into various groups, Beatrice and her brother meet Jeanine the leader of the Erudite and somehow their decision gets influenced by her words as she gave in truthful advice to them. While her brother chose Erudite, Beatrice chose Dauntless and that’s when all the fun started for Beatrice as she was now one of the Dauntless.

Adventure for the innocent looking Beatrice starts off from catching high speed trains to jumping out of them and then having courage to jump into broken buildings not knowing what’s inside and then getting a new name Tris as every faction after getting induced into various groups can’t go back to their families and have to give up what they used to be. The Training for becoming a Dauntless goes from awesome to worse as start to see various aspects of what it means to be a dauntless as they are pit against extreme situations both physically and mentally. They actually have to live together in a single pit with open bathrooms, fight with each other with bare fists and most of all show no mercy, however they had cool parts too like getting a tattoo, jumping from trains and target practice drills.

Tris is not physically strong and so she struggles on the leaderboard where the only top ranked students can join various ranks in Dauntless and the ones who fail to rank up are tagged as the factionless. Meanwhile Tris meets their instructor Four who happens to be one of the elite Dauntless leaders and although being exceptionally talented said no to the post of becoming the leader twice. Four and Tris slowly develop feelings for themselves as Four gets impressed by Beatrice tenacity to never give up as she climbs herself back from the lower ranks. Meanwhile Eric the leader of Dauntless is absolutely spineless and shows no mercy and especially for Tris who doesn’t fear him. Apparently Eric tries to get Tris out of the Dauntless but Tris manages to comeback with a high point scoring drill which they win because of Tris, as a result Tris is now one of the Dauntless as she manages to barely rank up the margin.

Now here was the good part, the bad part starts to pull in when Tris gets a secret visit from her mom who tells her to avoid telling anyone about her being the divergent because the Erudites were eliminating them one by one and tells her about the second stage of becoming an official Dauntless wherein they have to go through public sedation test before the officials to screen out any possible divergents. Meanwhile Four prepares candidates for the official Dauntless test by sedating candidates with induced hallucinations, the problems comes in when Tris breaks through the Hallucinations in just 3 minutes, 40% faster than normal as divergents have the ability to overcome their fears effortlessly. Suddenly everyone is talking about Tris for her exceptional timing and worried Tris tries to council with her brother only to find out the fact that he has been manipulated by the Erudites and also happens to find out the fact that Erudite is trying to eliminate the Abnegation to rule the factions. While things are not going too well for Tris, things got worse as three masked man try to assassinate her with one of them being her friend, however she gets rescued by Four who knows that Tris is a divergent and the attack was to eliminate her. What Tris didn’t knew was the fact that even Four was a divergent. Four teaches Tris how to increase her time during the hallucination drill by going together with Tris and teaches her how to avoid indirect breakthroughs and have a much indirect approach just like in everyday life. If you haven't figured it out yet then let me tell you Tris and Four have feelings for each other. ♥ Since now both of them are facing each other’s fears they come closer and thanks to Four Tris passes the final test of becoming a Dauntless successfully.

Now as the lover duo is even closer and knows about each other and the fact that four is son of leader of Abnegations, they start working together and find out the fact that Erudites are planning a invasion against the Abnegations using a special cognitive serum to control Dauntless to eliminate the Abnegations once and for all as they fear the human nature will bring greater harm to the factions. That night Tris finds out the fact that Dauntless are being injected by the very serum in order to control them but apparently the serum doesn’t work on divergents so they must act like being controlled otherwise if suspected might get killed by the Erudites. Both Tris and Four try to infiltrate in order to protect the Abnegations but Four gets captured in the process while Tris who is about to be executed gets rescued by her mom who also happens to be a divergent but while they try to escape her mom dies after taking a shot from the invasion army. While controlled Dauntless candidates are executing Abnegations one by one, Tris teams up with the hiding Abnegation members to stop Jeanine the mastermind behind the attacks. Tris takes the lead and guides Abnegations to stop Jeanine wherein she even loses her Father as well. Meanwhile Jeanine has sedated a divergent control cognitive into Four and pits him against Tris. But Tris somehow manages to bring Four back to senses and together they stop Jeanine who was controlling all the sedated Dauntless as they were about to execute millions of innocent Abnegations. Tris and Four stop the invasion by using the cognitive drug on Jeanine herself as she won’t turn the controllers off of the controlled Dauntless groups. Although it were the Divergents who protected the Abnegations and Dauntless, they left the Factions to make their own world as they found their own ways.
